On March 31, 1983, time stood still for Ahmed bin Hamad Al-Kharousi. A devastating road accident not only altered the course of his lifeโit redefined its very purpose. For 18 days, he lay in a deep coma, suspended between life and death. In that same tragic moment, he lost his beloved brother. When he awoke, he carried not only physical woundsโfractures, trauma, and lasting scarsโbut also a renewed spirit and a profound sense of mission.
โWhat saved me?โ he would later ask himself. The answer came with humility and gratitude: the blood of unknown heroesโstrangers who gave without ever knowing whose life they would save. Those life-giving drops, he says, restored his heartbeat and gave him a second chance, by the grace of God.
In the aftermath of the accident, Al-Kharousi received unwavering support from his country. He was sent to the United Kingdom for treatment at the stateโs expense, a gesture that reflected the deep-rooted values of care and responsibility. He speaks with particular reverence of the Royal Guard of Oman, the institution he proudly served and continues to honor. โIt was more than an ุงูู ุคุณุณุฉโit was my family,โ he recalls, acknowledging the care and support he received during his most critical days.
But it was not survival alone that defined his journeyโit was what came after.
Refusing to surrender to hardship, Al-Kharousi made a life-altering decision: he would not remain a recipient of compassionโhe would become its ู ุตุฏุฑ. From that moment forward, he dedicated his life to the cause of blood donation. What he once received from anonymous donors, he vowed to give back to humanity.
Driven by purpose, he transformed pain into ููุฉุ and memory into motivation. Over the years, he has become a leading figure in promoting voluntary blood donation, earning recognition as both a principal donor and a Goodwill Ambassador. His story resonates not as one of tragedy, but of resilience, gratitude, and service.
โAdversity does not break us,โ Al-Kharousi reflects. โIt reshapes usโso we may serve others better.โ
Today, his message is simple yet powerful: every drop of blood can mean the difference between life and death. His journey stands as a reminder that behind every act of giving lies the potential to save a lifeโand to inspire another.
With profound gratitude, he continues to pay tribute to those who stood by himโmost notably the Royal Guard of Oman, whose support he regards as a defining example of loyalty and dedication. With steadfast resolve, he reaffirms his commitment to remain, in his own words, โa source of compassion and a lifelong servant of humanity.โ
