Official Statement by the Norwegian Council for Tolerance & Peace (NCTP)
On the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
Today, the Norwegian Council for Tolerance & Peace (NCTP) joins the global community in commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons—a solemn occasion that serves as a humanitarian and moral reminder of the urgent need to rid our world of the ultimate threat to humanity and our planet.
The continued existence of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) provides no genuine security or safety for any nation; on the contrary, it poses an existential and perpetual threat to the fundamental human right to life, stability, and peace. Any potential use, or even the threat of use, of these catastrophic weapons would result in an unprecedented humanitarian and environmental disaster, the consequences of which would haunt generations to come.
In light of our solemn commitment to promoting global tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and security, the NCTP makes an urgent and direct appeal to world leaders, international bodies, and influential global actors:
Prioritize Nuclear Disarmament: Commit to immediate, tangible, and verifiable action to reduce and dismantle existing nuclear stockpiles without delay.
Eradicate Weapons of Mass Destruction: Unite international efforts to declare the world a completely WMD-free zone, encompassing nuclear, chemical, and biological armaments.
Redirect Resources Toward Development: Reallocate the immense financial and technical resources spent on nuclear arsenals toward eradicating poverty, fostering education, improving healthcare, and fighting climate change.
Uphold Diplomacy and Dialogue: Choose peaceful dialogue and international cooperation as the sole mechanism for resolving conflict and building mutual trust among nations.
True and lasting peace cannot flourish while humanity remains under the shadow of nuclear destruction. Today, with resolved determination and a shared conscience, we call upon the international community to stand united in creating a secure, peaceful, and WMD-free world for present and future generations.
