On 17 May we celebrate the Constitution and that Norway is a democracy where all citizens have the same rights
The constitution was signed on 17 May 1814, at Eidsvoll.
Norway had previously been ruled by the Danish king, but Norwegians wanted to have their own king, and to elect their own representatives to rule the country.
On the same day that the Constitution was signed, Christian Frederik was elected as the new Norwegian king. He was only allowed to be king for a few months, as he had to surrender the throne to the Swedish king, Karl Johan, as early as 10 October 1814.
