The Norwegian Council for Tolerance and Peace Welcomes the Ceasefire in Gaza
The Norwegian Council for Tolerance and Peace welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza and expresses deep relief that this step may bring an end to the immense suffering of civilians. We commend the tireless efforts of mediators and humanitarian actors who have worked to achieve this critical pause in hostilities.
However, while the ceasefire represents an essential first step, it must be followed by concrete measures to ensure justice, accountability, and lasting peace.
The Council emphasizes the following key points:
Protection of Civilians:
The protection of all civilians must remain the highest priority. Any further attacks or collective punishment against civilian populations are unacceptable and must cease immediately and unconditionally.
Path Toward Sustainable Peace:
The ceasefire should serve as a foundation for a comprehensive and enduring peace agreementโone that guarantees human security, dignity, and equal rights for all.
Humanitarian Access and Reconstruction:
Immediate and unhindered humanitarian access must be ensured to provide food, medical aid, and shelter for displaced persons. Reconstruction efforts should focus not only on physical rebuilding but also on psychological and social recovery for affected communities.
Commitment to International Law:
The Council reiterates that all parties are bound by international law, including the Geneva Conventions and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Respect for these principles is essential for any credible peace process.
The Norwegian Council for Tolerance and Peace calls upon the international community to remain vigilant, united, and proactive in ensuring that this ceasefire evolves into a just, sustainable, and accountable peaceโone that upholds the values of human dignity, justice, and coexistence for the people of Gaza and the region as a whole.
We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to working with international partners, humanitarian institutions, and civil society to promote truth, accountability, and lasting peace built on tolerance and mutual respect.
